VOLLEYBALL IS MY PASSION

Volleyball involves two teams of seven members each. The teams are separated on the court by a net. The teams have to "bat" the ball applying only their hands to pass the ball back and forth over the net. The game aims to pass the ball onto the next team without letting it touch the ground. The team which succeeds in making the ball fall on the ground of the opponent’s side gets a point. At the end of the part game, the team with the higher point wins.

Three weeks ago, I decided to join a volleyball team. It's not the Olympics or anything like that, it's just a municipal team. It might not be a big of a deal, but for a very non-sporty, nerdy, and a foodie like myself, it's a very new environment. My first day was the worst. Apparently, I joined the team at the perfect time. They're about to do a tournament in a couple of weeks against different teams around the municipality.

During my first day on the court, considering that I know NOTHING, I simply embarrassed myself. I didn't know how to serve the ball, I couldn't pass properly, and I kept getting scared that the ball would hit my face. Also, one of my teammates was really discouraging and intimidating. It's tough to play properly knowing that someone looks disappointed in you.

But then someone once told me that we can never get what we want if we are all quitters. So, I decided to channel the frustration from the negativity of my teammate and my zero athletic ability into something good.

I decided to list the things I need to improve in order to know how to properly play the game.

The first thing on my list is to know how to serve. That was one of the things I was struggling with. I practiced all day for two days just to make sure I could serve properly. Also, I've been watching a lot of volleyball games and tips from coaches. My favourite go-to YouTuber when it comes to knowing how to play volleyball is a American coach. She is an amazing coach that has zero arrogance in her. She's full of positivity and encouraging words when it comes to beginners.

All in all, I just want to send a message to the non-sporty people like I am who want to get a shot in sports. Don't be afraid. Don't let yourself be discouraged. Always know how to have fun and learn as you go. I am still not good at playing volleyball, but I know one day I will get the hang of it. We just need to be determined on what we want to achieve and to hold on to it. Keep on moving forward. You got this.
